Expedition To Prehistoric Rock Paintings (from / and to La Paz)
The most important prehistoric rock art site on the American continent: declared a Cultural World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1993, today it is yours to discover! A 4-day canyon trekking tour to a complex of several thousand year old rock art sites in the middle of a fascinating landscape of rugged canyons and endemic plants. This tour starts and ends in La Paz and has a total duration of 10 days. During the trekking tour the overnight stays are in a furnished tent camp and on the way to and from the Sierra San Francisco both ways you will stay overnight in hotels as well as in beach camps.
Hiking or optionally riding on mules through an extraordinary landscape that visitors to Baja California do not usually expect to see. The destination is a complex of up to 7,500 year old rock paintings that are a mysterious testimony of the beliefs and shamanistic rituals of the first dwellers of this area. You’ll also have plenty of contact with the local ranchers who will guide us; they have a particular history and are often referred to as the “last real Californians”. The average hiking time per day is about 4-5 hours.
- A 4-day trekking tour to the most preserved rock paintings which are several thousand years old and which were declared a Cultural World Heritage Site in 1993 by UNESCO. The complex constitutes the most important site of rock paintings on the entire American continent. All the camping gear and furniture needed is supplied by the company, except personal gear such as sleeping bag and isolation mat.
- Since we use cargo mules for all gear and supplies you only carry your personal day pack during the hike (riding animals are available at additional cost).
- The rock art sites we visit include La Pintada Cave and Las Flechas Cave and the even more remote but also impressively well preserved Musicians and Boca de San Julio Caves.
- On the canyon trekking tour full board is included; the meals are prepared by a professional chef.
- On the way between La Paz and the Sierra San Francisco mountain range which itself is part of the Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve you’ll also pass along the most scenic and beautiful bays and beaches of the peninsula, as well as lovely oases in the desert featuring beautiful old Jesuit mission churches.
- Frequent guided walks to explore the beautiful scenery and get to know the fascinating plant and bird life.
- Several beach camps at the most beautiful bays of the gulf in both southern and northern Baja California.
- Most travel dates are in autumn, when the climate cools down to an ideal hiking and camping temperature and after the season of summer rains, which nevertheless leave the vegetation a splendid green with many species flowering.
- Possibility of Copper Canyon extension trip or beach extensions at La Paz or Todos Santos.
