Baja Camping and Hiking
The Active Way To Experience Beautiful Baja California!
This 14-day tour takes the visitor to the most important highlights of both the northern and the southern parts of the Baja peninsula. The tour with mostly camping accommodation features trekking to the spectacular rock paintings declared a Cultural World Heritage Site, the pristine Angels' Bay and the wild and strangely beautiful boulder field at Cataviña plus several beach camps on the coast of the Gulf of California. The itinerary starts and ends in La Paz and travel dates are scheduled from autumn to spring and thus not limited to the whale watching season - but on those dates excursions to observe Gray Whale are offered. Tour operation is guaranteed with a minimum of 4 participants.
A 3-day trekking tour to the most important rock paintings site on the entire American continent, optional Gray Whale watching during the season (January - March), boat tours to explore the abundant marine life and beautiful islands, remote oases with old colonial mission churches, rugged mountain ranges, hikes through strange and unique environments such as Cataviña discovering many endemic plant species are only some of the highlights of this tour.
Camping in comfortable camps puts you right at the heart of the natural world that you came to enjoy - you are a part of it, and you can experience it much more deeply. That doesn’t mean that essential comfort has to be sacrificed - you will be surprised how comfortable our tent camps are with all the facilities they offer. The many included meals are prepared by a professional chef.

Below you find a listing of some of the included sites / activities:
- Multi-day excursion into the exceptionally beautiful Sierra San Francisco, a mountain range with a very interesting and sometimes endemic flora, rugged canyon scenery and prehistoric cave paintings. Three-day trek to the most preserved rock paintings which are several thousand years old and which were declared a Cultural World Heritage Site in 1993 by UNESCO. The complex constitutes the most important site of rock paintings in the whole of the Americas.
- OPTIONAL* boat trip to observe Gray Whales on Ojo de Liebre Lagoon (Scammon's Lagoon) at Guerrero Negro.
- Day hike through the marvelous landscape of Cataviña also known as giants' playground. Wind erosion has shaped massive pink granite boulders into bizarre forms, which blend with over 15 m tall columnar cacti, as well as the endemic Blue Palms and Boojum Trees to create an almost surreal landscape and a truly enchanting atmosphere. We'll also visit a little known cave to admire well-preserved rock paintings.
- Boat trip through the jewel of northern Baja: the breathtaking Angels' Bay where a huge diversity of marine life may be encountered - from sea birds to sea lions, from dolphins to Finback and other species of whales.
- Excursion by boat from the port of López Mateos at Magdalena Bay. We explore the mangrove wetland to observe birds, look for Bottlenose Dolphins and hike over the dunes of Magdalena Island to the Pacific shore.
Only on the winter dates we’ll admire the Gray Whales that arrive to give birth instead of hiking on the island.
- Frequent guided walks to enjoy the beautiful scenery and to explore and get to know the fascinating plant and bird life.
- Several beach camps at the most beautiful bays of the Gulf in both southern and northern Baja California.
- You'll see the entire process for production of salt by evaporation of sea water at the world's largest “open sky” facility producing an average of 7.5 million tons of salt a year.
- Visit to a bird reserve with many resident and migratory bird species, maybe we are lucky enough to observe ospreys while fishing; on winter dates we'll also look out for the American White Pelican, who is a seasonal visitor to Baja. Another interesting stop will be at a zone of shifting dunes where we discover nature’s beauty on a tiny scale by examining the formations sculptured by wind and sand.
- City tours of La Paz with its charming beachfront boulevard, of the historical center of Loreto, which was once capital of all of California and features the very first of the Jesuit missions and an informative museum about the history of the missions, and the picturesque palm oasis San Ignacio with its interesting museum about the rock paintings and its gorgeous mission church.
- Visit to the oasis Mulegé with its Jesuit mission church dating from 1705 and its panoramic viewpoint over the entire palm oasis from where it's even possible to marvel at the frigate birds’ strange way of drinking fresh water.
- Tour of Santa Rosalía - the unique old copper mining town of French origin featuring a steel church designed by Gustav Eiffel.
- Nature exploration walk at the most famous volcanic region of Baja California known as the Three Virgins to explore lava tongues and the abundant vegetation due to the fertile mineral soil.
- Visit to the Reptile Shelter in La Paz, where you’ll get to know some of the turtles, lizards, snakes, and birds of Baja California.
- Possibility of adding an extension trip to the Copper Canyon or beach extensions at La Paz or Todos Santos.
