Baja California
The desert climate is characterized by very intense solar radiation and very low humidity. There are pronounced differences between summer and winter temperatures as there are also between day and night temperatures. On winter travel dates it is a good idea to bring some warm clothing.
Baja California has a very diverse and complex climate featuring many microclimates depending on altitude, latitude and distance to the Pacific Ocean etc, thus by taking advantage of this fact almost the entire year is a good travel season for the peninsula.
Baja California does not have an actual rainy season as in southern Mexico; rainfall may occur in the summer months due to subtropical depressions or, rather rarely, in December and January due to a strong Niño-effect.
The southern part of the peninsula has though a hurricane season from the end of August through all of September and only during this time do we suspend travel activities for safety reasons.
Baja California
The peninsula of Baja California is much more mountainous than generally expected by its visitors. Considerable altitude though is seldom reached and on our inland routes we move at altitudes between 400 - 700 m (1,300 - 2,300 ft.) above sea level and even while visiting the rock paintings in the Sierra San Francisco the maximum altitude does not exceed 1,150 m (3,770 ft.) above sea level.
Only when visiting the National Park San Pedro Mártir will we ascend for a short period of time up to 2,800 m (9,200 ft.) above sea level; our overnight stay the day before will be at a much lesser altitude and helps us to acclimatize.
People with heart, respiratory or circulatory problems though should consider carefully their participation in the daytrip up to the National Park.
Copper Canyon
The area between the canyon rim at the train stations Posada Barrancas and Divisadero and the valley of Creel has an average altitude of 2,300 m (7,550 ft.) above sea level. Nevertheless it ought to be taken into account that the train ride takes you from sea level at Los Mochis to that elevation in one day, which by the way is the same elevation as Mexico City.
